In answer to questions about my headboard, I do not have one currently. I will actually make the blocks into a wall-hanging, 4 blocks wide and 2 blocks tall. I will make the backing in a solid color, and the whole thing will hang from a shelf I have above my bed. I still have to make 4 more blocks. Green (under the sea), yellow (no theme yet), peach (no theme yet), and silver and gray ( no theme yet). I am trying to make each block speak about my life and loves. The pink one is about the fact that I am a girl, and really love frilly things. The cream and gold one is about my love of quiet and calm. The blue is about my love of stitching. The purple one, which isn't shown yet, is about my love of gardens and tea parties. I will post it as soon as I finish it. I don't know how to make my pics get large. I'll have to check with a friend who does a lot of pics. If there is something you especially want to see, let me know and I will make a close up to post.

Best Laid Plans

You know, that old saying is so true. The best laid plans often go awry. It has been raining and windy both yesterday and today, so I haven't taken pictures yet. If I take them without natural light, they are very hard to see, very dark. I was planning to update the blocks for my headboard of my bed, the BCQC pieces I'm working on, the CTC stuff, and some Crewel work I have been enjoying lately. I hope the sun comes out soon. I have lots to catch up on. Here's hopeing 'tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya' tomorrow' will be a better day.

I have had a very difficult winter, and just thought I should check out my blog. I haven't blogged in months. So I have decided to do something about it.

I have been teaching on-line classes over at StitchMAP on Yahoo. It's not too difficult except for when you really need to do something hands-on. That does take some working out. I am currently teaching Basic Crazy Quilting and Color Theory. I will post some pics this weekend, because I am going to take pictures tomorrow when the sun shines.

Because these classes are new, the mentors are also taking the class. We are making the projects along with the apprentices. If you would like to learn something new to do with a needle, or need something to help fill your days (LOLOLOL), why not come over and join us. You would be welcome.

Some time back, I received a beautiful pink block in the mail. I have no idea who sent it to me, but I am grateful. This picture is the pink block now that I have finished working on it. I am planning to make a series of blocks to go together with this one, which I will put together in a head board for my bed. I expect it to be wondrous.

I love surprises, don't mistake that. But I would love to know who sent the 2 envelopes I have received in the past couple of weeks. I got the most beautiful block in an envelope with my return address on it, and a cryptic note on the back that said "enjoy". I have an idea who sent it, but am not sure. So just in case the reader is reading this, Thank You. I just love the colors and the layout. I have some ideas for how to work it, and then will post on my blog site.

I just got another envelope in todays mail. It has a return address of Patricia Thompson in Florida. I don't think I know the lady, but she sent me some lovely threads. I just wish I knew what kind of threads they are. But, never the less, I really appreciate them. They are beautiful colors and I will put them to good use.

This is Helena's Blue "Garden" Block. I did the upper left corner and down the left side most of the way, the seam connecting them and on the right side of the long block, and the center block. The corner has spider web and spider with a cluster of eggs that she is guarding. Below that is a row of butterflies to hold the seam. Then the next thing is the bunch of blue flowers on the upper limb of the tree (which is out of site except for the 2 limbs).

Below that, on the other limb is a stumpwork peacock, with the tail done in sequins and beads. Below that is a metallic winged dragonfly with a bead body. The seam on this block is cretan stitch filled with sequins and beads, The sequins are clear with silver glitter in them, so they look blue and reflect mostly blue.

Finally, the center seam is done with metalic blue thread on the flowers and leaves, with the large flower centers filled with blue seed beads.

Ok, brag time. My 7 year old grandaughter has been taking tumbling and cheerleading classes for some time now. She is a very driven child. Anounced last night were the National Championships. There are four regional championships, and her team took first place in regional. Anounced last night were the National Championships. They took second place in the nationals. I could just scream. Needlebook Tutorial

Well, here it is, as promised. I hope it makes sence, and that you get the needlebook you dream of. If there are any questions or problems, please let me know and I will try to correct it.

AMBER’S NEEDLEBOOK TUTORIAL

Materials:

Backing fabric:
2 Rectangles, 2 ¾ inches x 4 inches
Pencil or other marking device
Lining fabric, 2 pieces, 5 inches z 7 inches
3 – 5 rectangles of felt for pages (same size as above)
One piece on heavy interfacing cut same as lining

Start by drawing a rectangle (see above) on the backing fabric. Now piece your book in whatever colors you wish. You can even use just one color. Be sure to leave about ¼ inch of overlap on your edges. Baste down your pieces, and trim seams to make stitching easier. I do not use a hoop, but you may if you like. Now for the fun part, do your seams and pull out the basting threads. Embellish to your hearts content, but watch you don’t go over the pattern edge, or get too close. When all of that is done, we start construction.

Determine which piece will be the front. Take one piece of lining, and stitch the front rectangle to it as follows:

Trim both pieces to just a little wider than the rectangle, I go to an even 3 inches by 4 ½ inches. Fold the lining in half so it is 3 1/2 by 5. Measure ½ inch from the fold and mark with a line. Open up the lining and place the front piece face down on the lining piece, with the left side seam marking on the marked line and sew it down. Fold it back over the lining so it is face up, and pin to hold. Measure 1 inch from the front piece and mark it with a line. Put the back piece face down on the lining and the left seam marking on the line, and sew it down. Fold it back over the lining and then iron both pieces so they lay flat.

Take the other piece of lining and the interfacing, and place it over the front and back pieces so the edges line up with the other lining piece. Stitch up the front over the top and down the back making sure to catch the edges of your pieced front and back. Trim the edges and cut off the corner edges so it will not be too bulky when turned. Turn if so that the front and back are out. It should look pretty good at this point. Go ahead, get excited. Fold the bottom edge up inside and whip the bottom being sure to have the front and back piece’s edges inside.

To make the needle pages, fold the felt pieces in half and stitch them to the cover individually. This will give you six pages. You may add as many as five felt pieces for needle pages. On the front, sew a button on the right edge about ½ way down. On the back, stitch a button loop on the edge lining up with the button. Fold the book closed, and put the loop around the button. Adjust it if it is too long, or rework it if it is too short.

That’s it. Your book is done. You may mark the pages for which type of needle you have on it, or just put your needles in and go.

Friendship Puzzle Pieces

Well, my daughter has returned from Chicago and I am no longer dog sitting. I have been busy while I was away. Below you will find a picture of all my puzzle pieces tgether and then close ups of each. I have several piece of work that have been sitting much too long, so I am working on them. I would love to have them done fast, but I am a realist. I have other things that I have promised, and they must get done first.

Well, while babysitting, I have almost finished my purse. Only 2 more seams, and then I can put it together. Also, I have the first puzzle piece done except for the edging which I will do this afternoon. I have my plans made for the next 3 puzzle pieces, and I want to start a surface embroidery project. I sometimes feel as though my plate is too full, but othertimes I wonder why I am not getting much done. Oh well, I just keep plugging along.

I just left the Grandkids, and am home at last. We played with my charms and special buttons. They love to just look through them every now and then. Now that I am home, I received 2 detritus bags from Vickie Clayton at Threadart. Such beautiful colors. I also received 2 of the 3 Teresa Wentzler books I ordered from Amazon. The other should be here this week. I don't very often get to order things by e-mail, or even shop in a store for more than some thread. I have a good start on the first puzzle piece for the Pat Winter Gathers Friendship Puzzle swap. They arn't due until June 1st, but why wait. I am enjoying a few days of quiet before a new order for St. Michaels comes in. They want a set of robes for the Deacon. They don't take long, but I really hate working with the fabric. It frays and flies everywhere. So I will wait patiently nd enjoy the respit.

Sorry about not posting

I haven't felt very well for a few days, not an excuse, just a reason. I did get both sides of the biscornu done. Will photograph them tomorrow and post them. I haven't done much else. I worked on my purse I started back in October, 2008. It will be done soon. It has been a real joy to work on, but I had to finally say enough. I aparently have a penchant for encrusting. I will log it as soon as the blocks are done. I also gotten started on Winnie's block for the round robin. I put a spider web and spider on, did a couple of seams with bullion roses (my very most favorite) and some other stitches. Next I want to work on one of the velvet patches.

I also have some more to do with the Dalmaticas. I should get them done tomorrow. I got out of babysitting tomorrow, so I will have some time to get them done.

Another Day

Well, I babysat all day. I don't get much work done when I babysit. I have just a few more stitches, and the biscornu will get put together. At least I have one thing completed. My right arm and hand keep falling asleep (carpal tunnel), so I feel like I should just go to bed. But I won't. I'll keep on working until I get everything done that I possibly can. It's going to storm here, rain and lightening, so I probably won't get much done with the sewing machine. I will still get some hand work done.

I'll see what happens an let you know tomorrow. Pleasant evening and sweet repose.

End of day recap

Well, I got one side of the Biscornu done and started the second side. I got almost one Dalmatica done before my daughter called for a few hours of babysitting. I have 11 grandchildren, fortunately (or not) only 3 of them live near me. I usually babysit Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Sometimes I get called for other days. It really interferes with my sewing, but I do love my little rascals. Brady is 5, Morgan is 7, and Justan is 15. Justin usually watches the little ones on Tuesday and Thursday, but sometimes school things interfere. I have received my round robin list for cross titching. Thankfully the date to mail is not until April 30. I still have some daylight left, and I can work by lamp light, so I will see how much further I get for today. More tomorrow.

ANOTHER BUSY DAY

Well, I got the Needle Book projects in the mail today. Several people have mentioned an interest in getting a set. Wee'll see. I have started a biscornu for the swap on Stitching Fingers Cross Stitch. I am using the Asisi (sic) technique to make it. One side will have the item in black, the other side will have the backgrouond in black. Those are the recipients favorite colors, and I am working it on 11 ct. Aida in pure white. I have offered to do a swap with another lady, but she hasn't gotten back with me yet. When I get this done, I will be working on Winnie's blue block. I'm a bit nervous about that, it is so beautiful, and this is so new to me. I will do the best I can, and hope everyone else does theirs and makes mine look better. I also am in Pat Winters Puzzle swap, and a round robin for SFcross stitch group. But first today, I have 3 Dalmatica's to finish up for St. Michael's Church. I don't think I can get all of this done in one day, better try for 2 days and see where I get.

This is the actual set I made for the CQ4N swap. Below is the set.

Below is a close up of the Needle Book. It has six pages for needles, with room to add four more if wanted. It is approximately one inch thick, and is very much a little book.

Below is the Pin Keep. The pins go into the cording on the edge and into the center of the heart. Room for many pins. The flower in the upper right corner was made using several treatments. The pot, center and lower leaves ere all done in detached buttonhole. The stem is couched. The upper leaves are done in needle weaving. I dyed the hearts and edging with Easter egg dye. My first attemp at dying.

I read a message yesterday morning about making a biscornu out of patch blocks. I had to try it, as I do not know of anyone who has made them. I made the two below, the larger one is 3" and the smaller one is 2.5". Not too difficult, except getting the edges stitched correctly.

This is the top heart of a wall hanging. I saw the pattern on a web site. It i made with medium weight card stock, ribbon, lace, glue, and rub ons.

A Simple Embroidery in layers

Before I knew about Brazilion Embroidery, I made this little piece. All of the motifs were first done in stem stitch, and then they were covered by another stitch.

I got the pattern for this from Doe.c.doe. It is stitched on "silk essence" from JoAnn's Fabric store. I used some Neat DMC threads that I have had for years. Don't remember what they were called.
